About Bears
The eight different types of bear to be found in the world today are grouped together by scientists into the family Ursidae. In evolutionary terms, their closest living relatives are dogs and raccoons.
All the bears in the pictures on this site are Grizzlies, a North American subspecies of the Brown Bear, Ursus arctos.
Bears are the largest land-based carnivores in the world, but most bear species eat pretty much anything that's available. The BC Grizzlies usually go for nuts and berries in the spring, switching to a high-protein salmon diet while they're gaining weight in time for winter.
